Grow a Garden Pet Tier List: Best Pets and Abilities
Pets in Grow a Garden earn their spot through passive abilities, not looks. The best pets give strong XP boosts, harvest value, hatch speed, or growth speed, and each buff grows with the pet's weight. This tier list ranks common pets by role and strength. To see your own pet's exact buff, run its stats through the Grow a Garden calculator.
How pet tiers are decided
A pet's rank depends on two things: what its ability does and how strong that ability is at your pet's weight. A great ability on a light pet can lose to a good ability on a heavy one.
Ability type matters most
Some buffs are simply more useful. XP boosts speed up leveling every other pet, and harvest value adds Sheckles on every harvest. These broad buffs tend to rank above niche ones.
Weight scales every buff
Every ability adds a per kilogram bonus on top of its base percentage, so heavier pets buff harder. This means the tier list shifts based on your pet's weight, which you can check in our pet weight guide.
Pet tier list by ability
The table groups common pets by their ability type and community-estimated base strength. Base percent is the buff at low weight, and the per kilogram value shows how fast it grows.
| Pet | Ability | Base percent (est.) | Per kg growth (est.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Night Owl | XP Boost | 15 | 0.30 |
| Monkey | Harvest Value | 12 | 0.22 |
| Capybara | XP Boost | 10 | 0.20 |
| Sea Otter | Growth Speed | 10 | 0.25 |
| Chicken | Hatch Speed | 10 | 0.20 |
| Bunny | Harvest Value | 10 | 0.15 |
| Starfish | XP Boost | 5 | 0.10 |
| Frog | Growth Speed | 5 | 0.12 |
Top tier picks
Night Owl leads for XP boosting with the highest base and per kilogram values, which makes it great for leveling a stable of pets. Monkey tops harvest value, adding Sheckles on every harvest, so it pays for itself over time.
Solid mid tier picks
Capybara, Sea Otter, and Chicken are reliable all rounders. Capybara backs up Night Owl for XP, Sea Otter speeds growth so crops turn over faster, and Chicken cuts hatch times when you are opening lots of eggs.
How weight and mutations change the ranking
The base table assumes low weight. Once you factor in a heavy pet and mutations, the strongest buffs can jump well past their base numbers.
The buff formula
Buff = (base percent + weight x per kg growth) x mutation multiplier x quantity
A Night Owl at 20 kg gives 15 plus 20 times 0.30, which is 21 percent before mutations. Add a mutation and it climbs further. Try your own numbers in the Grow a Garden pet ability calculator.
Mutations on pets
Pet mutations multiply the buff. Community estimates put Shiny near 1.5 times, Inverted near 2 times, and Rainbow near 3 times. A Rainbow high weight pet with a strong base ability sits at the very top of any tier list.
Which pet should you level first
Pick the pet that matches your current goal, then grow it heavy so its buff scales up.
If you want to level faster
Start with an XP boost pet like Night Owl or Capybara. Faster XP compounds, because a leveled XP pet then speeds up every other pet you raise. Our pet XP time calculator shows how long leveling takes.
If you want more Sheckles
Pick a harvest value pet like Monkey, which adds value to every harvest. Pair it with fast crops for a steady income boost, and see our money guide for the full plan.
